Oddly scenic threesome

“What am I really looking at here?”  I felt drawn to this scene, but wasn’t sure how to capture it in a single photograph.   On separate occasions I returned, wondering where to place my perspective and attention—a process illustrated by these three.

.

This week’s photo challenge invited photographers to consider ways one may tell a story,
show variations on a subject, or otherwise respond to the prompt “Threes”.  (alternate viewing arrangement below)

Update: these three photos inspired  blogger Divya Kumar to write  her poetic story The Tree that Remembers”.  It’s fascinating to see images evoking a story in the mind of an imaginative writer!

  1. Hi there! I was looking through the responses to the “threes photo challenge” and came across your entry. I was drawn to the images you’ve captured… there’s something about that tree, that house (?), in that open landscape that really speaks to me. Beautiful work! I’d love to base my entry for this week’s three’s writing challenge (http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2014/03/03/writing-challenge-threes/) on your photos. I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about the scene… if that’s okay with you. Where was it taken? And what were you looking at? If you’d prefer to leave it open to interpretation, that’s fine too… I was just curious :)

    • Divya, as a writer you can leave it open to your interpretation and imagination. I look forward to reading what you post!

To answer your question, however, as you are curious to know know more . . .

These photos were taken just off Interstate 80 that runs from the west coast of the USA to the east coast. This part of Interstate 80 runs through miles of fields and orchards. California, known for its network of highways and freeways, also produces more than half of the produce of the entire United States.

If one exits the highway to drive a rural route, one can observe the land, wonder what’s growing, and notice its seasonal changes. One day, as I was leaving a farmers-market-like store that sells fruits, vegetables and nuts grown locally, I spotted this photogenic scene across the road.

How many years I’ve driven past it! Seeing anew—that’s the beauty of taking up photography as a daily practice.
Interestingly, the rich, productive land looks barren in these photos, as if it were desert land. I took the first photos in the late fall when only a few leaves remained on the tree. The peculiar branch—brontosaurus-dinosaur-like—caught my attention in the early-evening light.

Two weeks later I looked again in the late afternoon. A white truck like a bird—like a sign of life—drove through the field in the distance. The house on the edge of the road looked so curiously placed, as if sheltering under the lone tree. Maybe it is a place for workers to rest in the summertime heat under the shade. I don’t know. The little house looks well kept. Like you, I like how it stirs the imagination.
