Shadow Calligraphy

Along the path,
a fallen branch
and its shadow calligraphy.

The branch unreadable
with no leaf.
The shadow written
in a language
unrecognizable—
not foreign—
just forgotten.

A walk without
one’s own shadow,
observing others’,
only finding one’s own
when heading home.

    • Thank you for commenting, Bette! Sometimes poems look hieroglyphic (almost like the shadow “calligraphy” in the poem), so I appreciate hearing when something comes across.
