What’s in a Guess?

Image

Why the prize for the one right answer?
No prize for the very good guess?
Don’t guesses count?

Children wave their hands—I know! I know!

If their guesses were valued,
they’d feel engaged forever.
They’d keep eagerly seeking and imagining
in a way that leads to finding answers.

If guesses were valued.

They’d be waving their hands, and
volunteering:
an answer, a chore, a hope,
or
another question
that keeps us guessing.

  1. Wonderful! It brought back poignant memories of elementary school and being ridiculed and discouraged by teachers who only wanted to hear THEIR right answers…
