Out of the Blue

out of the blue

A fish out of water,
with only seconds
of breath,
wonders why
it doesn’t feel at home.

Its gills can’t make sense
of the oxygen.
Its fins can’t make sense
of all else.

Surrendering,
with one last flip—
a flashing whip,
a splashing
return
to home,
creek,
breath,
and swim—

What was that all about?
it wonders aloud,
then leaping out
to snatch a fly,
feels the air, the flight,
the thrill

above all

falling
out of one blue,
into another,
and shimmering away.
