Writing on Glass

Writing on glass—
to you, on the other side.
Can you read what I write
right to left,
left to right?

Will it turn to conversation
that declares no winner,
or to argument
which supposes one?

Will we scribble our replies
on glass that reverses?
Will we translate or hold a mirror?
Will we see the writing or the writer?
Will we know either?
Will we suppose both?
Why, when you write hand
and I write hand,
the words bear no resemblance?

Will we declare all words questions
and all answers questions
undeclared?
Will you open the window
that I now see?
Where is the latch?
Will it break if I pry it open?
Will we learn to write backwards?
Will we hold our hands to the glass
and find their resemblance.
